Supervisors discuss future Social Services location

At the Dec. 16 meeting of the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors (BOS), a discussion regarding the future site of the Department of Social Services (DSS) office was led by Jeff Shepherd, the county maintenance supervisor.

The topic will again be addressed at the BOS organizational meeting scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.

The current DSS offices are located at the Appomattox Community Center, located off of Confederate Boulevard, while its long-time offices on Court Street are being renovated due to water damage.

The primary issue at hand is office space and whether the Court Street site, located in the lower level of the building that houses the Appomattox County Public Schools administrative offices, is the best option for the future of DSS.

Shepherd explained that the DSS workers looked at several proposed layouts of the Court Street offices, along with a 3-D sketch, and although they liked some of the ideas they are concerned with the lack of private office space for caseworker to meet in confidentiality with clients.

“If I put what we have now on Court Street, there is no room for expansion at all,” Shepherd said. “I mean, we’re tight. As far as the amount of filing cabinets that’s needed, the room that’s needed, we couldn’t grab another office the way that it consists right now.”

Concerns about space for senior activities at the Appomattox Community Center were voiced by Shirley Wheeler, site manager for Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living (CVACL).
