Appomattox Insights: Board of Supervisors Meeting Highlights

The Board of Supervisors finished up the 2024 meeting on December 20. It was a busy meeting with several appearances and a few action items. Below are the highlights.

Appearances

Mr. Alex Rendo from Dominion Energy joined us to inform us about projected electric lines that may affect our county. Dominion has a diversity of generating electric from solar, wind, nuclear, coal and natural gas. As energy demand is rising, some of their transmission line will need updating. No plans are completed yet. He was here to tell us that some lines may have to come through our county. I would encourage you to watch his portion of the meeting on YouTube.

Mr. Rob Mann from Appalachian Electric Power gave us an update on the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) that was announced in November. The nuclear plant will be located in Campbell County but they do have 62 acres of land in Appomattox County. He noted that the open house they held in early December was successful. They are now at the point to begin applying for permits. The permitting process will take about 3.5 years. The first in the process is the Early Site Application. He requested that the Board of Supervisors support their application and requested a letter from the board showing their support. The plant projected completion date is 2036 and will bring jobs to the area. The Board voted to send the letter of support.
