McKinley Cardwell was officially sworn in as the newest member of the Appomattox Town Council on Friday, Jan. 10. The ceremony took place at the Appomattox County Courthouse with Circuit Court Clerk Janet Hix administering the oath of office.

Cardwell was accompanied by several family members, including his wife, mother and father-in-law, all of whom Cardwell said supported him and “played integral parts” of his 2024 campaign.

“My father and mother-in-law, barber and hairstylist, respectively, were booked with clients but expressed their support for me before I went into the oath ceremony,” Cardwell said in a Times Virginian interview. “I am not self-made; it took a village to get me where I am, and I am grateful for that.”

Cardwell is a 27-year-old lifelong Appomattox resident who earned a bachelor’s degree from Liberty University, works in the musical therapy field (primarily with seniors), and supervised concierge services at Centra Southside Hospital in Farmville during the COVID-19 pandemic.
