Each year when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, millions of people around the world officially begin the quest of fulfilling their New Year’s resolutions. Sometimes those goals stick but many times they fade away by Valentine’s Day.
Among the frequent promises people make to themselves include such ambitions as losing weight, building muscle, paying off financial debt, taking a vacation, purchasing a home or automobile, or finding a new job. But how many vow to become a servant? How many make a promise to lend a helpful hand to those in need?
Perhaps more folks could find inspiration in an Appomattox man known affectionately as “Big Foot,” who was a picture of servanthood until his sudden passing in December 2023 at age 69.
Henry “Big Foot” Davis was a man well known for his hard work and willingness to be of service to anyone who came in contact with him.
Born in 1954, Davis was a resident of Evergreen and Red House, and graduated from Appomattox County High School in 1972. After graduating, he went to work for Thomasville Furniture, according to his obituary, then spent 30 years at Fred Jones Well Company, and later retired from J.E. Jamerson.
Herbie Jones, owner of Fred Jones Well Company, was a young child, age 4 or 5, when Davis worked for his late father, Fred. Herbie recalls Davis as being a friendly man whom everyone seemed to like.
