The Appomattox Raiders girls basketball team improved its record to 5-7 by winning two out of three games on last week’s schedule. The Raiders are fourth in the Dogwood District at 2-2 as of press time.

Appomattox won home games against Chatham 48-40 on Jan. 14 and Buckingham 46-39 on Jan. 15 before taking a 54-48 loss at William Campbell on Friday night.

The Raiders displayed perseverance in the matchup versus the Chatham Cavaliers, which entered the game with an 8-1 record. Appomattox was forced to overcome a first quarter 12-3 deficit. Jakiyah Giggetts of Chatham scored on consecutive layups and totaled eight points in the opening quarter. The Raiders’ first points came with less than a two minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Georgia Mills.

Appomattox clawed their way back in the second quarter, cutting the deficit in half at 14-7 on a 3-point shot by Leah Almond. Mills’ ensuing bucket made the score 16-10.
