The Appomattox Raiders boys basketball team is off to a good start in the 2024-25 season, winning their first two home games against the Amherst Lancers (62-41) on Dec. 3 and the Cumberland Dukes (58-33) on Dec. 5.
The Raiders tipped the season off against Amherst. Appomattox held what was akin to a 3-point shooting contest, scoring 27 of its 62 points on shots beyond the arch. Brayden Coleman led the way, connecting on four 3-pointers for 12 points. Riley Chandler added nine points on three long-range shots.
Appomattox opened the game on an 11-2 run on a blocked shot by Owen Chavis that resulted in a layup by Max Nitti.
Chandler’s second 3-pointer of the night gave the Raiders a 17-4 lead early in the second quarter but the Lancers ripped off eight consecutive points to cut the deficit to 17-12, spurred by 3-pointers from Holt Bresach and Jaion Morris.
Appomattox travels to Amherst tonight. Results will be reported in next week’s Times Virginian.
