Man charged in connection to juvenile's shooting of horses, dog in Spout Spring

The investigation into the previously reported horse deaths from March 15 on Double Bridges Road in Appomattox County is still continuing.

A complete veterinary assessment of all the animals on the property was completed. It was determined five horses had been killed by gunshot. An additional five horses were wounded during this event. The five wounded horses are continuing to receive veterinary treatment under the supervision of Appomattox Animal control and are expected to survive.

Investigators also determined a companion dog had been killed by the same juvenile previously charged with killing the horses. Additional charges are pending.

Investigators have also charged Dennis Lee Martin, 57, of Spout Spring, with violation of Va. Code 18.2-56.2 recklessly leave a loaded and unsecured firearm so as to endanger a child, and violation of 18.2-371, willfully contribute to the delinquency of a child. These charges were placed in relation to this investigation.

Appomattox Sheriff's Office investigators are continuing to work closely with Appomattox Animal Control, The Virginia Office of the Attorney General, and the Appomattox County Commonwealth's Attorney to determine if any additional charges against any additional individuals will be placed.
