Following nearly two months of decline, the number of continued unemployment claims filed in the greater Lynchburg area increased last week according to the latest figures reported by the Virginia Employment Commission.

A total of 9,056 continued unemployment claims were filed in the Central Virginia Workforce Development Area during the week of July 4, according to VEC data released Thursday, July 9.

The current figure represents a week-to-week increase in continued unemployment claims of 4.3 percent. The number of continued claims filed increased in all five localities of the workforce area, with Campbell County experiencing the largest percentage increase at 8.3 percent. Continued claims are made by individuals who have filed an initial claim for unemployment and are now making weekly claims to continue receiving benefits.
