Words from the Chamber (Includes Halloween events schedule)

The most important event over the next few days is the election. Please vote. If you cannot schedule to be at the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 2, drop by the registrar’s office on or before Saturday, Oct. 30 and vote early. I cast my ballot last week. The process is quick and simple.

On the day that I voted there was a poll being taken (entirely voluntary) in the parking lot regarding positions of interest in the current political environment. I answered all of the questions on their ballot except for one that I did not feel was a simple “for or against” position as it depended on the particular situation.

Close behind the election and probably a higher priority, if you ask the kids, are Halloween activities. There is a lot planned and my attempts to include everyone have certainly left some out, but here is what I have gleaned from social media.

On Oct. 30: Classical Trick or Treat by the Appomattox Historical Society at the old jail, 4-6 p.m.; Trunk or Treat opportunities from 4-6 p.m. in the Town of Pamplin and at Falling River Country Club; from 5-7 p.m. at the Thomas Terrace Baptist Church; from 6-8 p.m. at the Appomattox Assembly of God; beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Iceland’s; and beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Hebron Baptist Church.

On Oct. 31: Trunk or Treat from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bible Baptist Church and the New Hope Baptist Church; from 5-8 p.m. at the Appomattox Moose Lodge 975; and from 6- 7:30 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church (to be held inside).

Please use the above information to not only know where to safely and conveniently take any youngsters in your care during the Halloween weekend but also to perhaps help out these organizations by donating candy or your time to assist them in running the event.

This weekend is also the final three performances of Young Frankenstein by Wolfbane Productions. Saturday night appears to be sold out but tickets are still available for Thursday and Friday nights. I attended this past weekend and enjoyed the show. Although the silliness of the piece does not carry the depth of some of their other productions, those in attendance, along with the cast, will have a good time.

I will close this week’s column by recounting the best news that I have heard in some time. The recent biopsy results for Coach Doug Smith showed no signs of abnormal cells of increased plasma levels. On behalf of our community, we thank the knowledge and efforts of the many involved in his medical teams and the good Lord above for his recovery from multiple myeloma. We are blessed by his contributions to our community and hope that he will be with us for many, many years to come.
