Audit report finds Town of Appomattox in good standing

At its December meeting, the Appomattox Town Council heard good news on its fiscal year 2023 report from Hailey Fox of accounting firm Brown Edwards.

The report expresses an “unmodified opinion” of the town’s financial status, which Town Manager Terry McGhee explained as “a full-quality approval of our system.”

Brown Edwards is a regional firm that includes an office in Lynchburg and is rated as a Top 100 firm by INSIDE Public Accounting. Any municipality that receives more than $100,000 in federal funds must use a high-level firm, as required by the federal Single Audit Act of 1984.

“We’re getting as serious an audit as any small town will ever get,” McGhee said in a Times Virginian interview. “They ask us not only about the general funds, the water and the sewer, but also any grant money…and then all of our assets, the stuff that we own. At this point, they’re even auditing the stuff that we lease. ”
