Courtney Layne and Kelsey Hackett are familiar names for those who follow Appomattox County High School sports. They graduated with the Class of 2022 after having won two consecutive Class 2 state softball championships as members of the Raiders.
On Tuesday, March 6, Layne and Hackett returned to the Central Virginia region to play softball. This time, they were both wearing University of Virginia (UVA) Cavaliers uniforms for a road game at Liberty University.
Liberty won 6-2 but Hackett entered the game as a pinch runner in place of starting third baseman Sarah Coon, who was hit by a pitch from Liberty pitcher Karlie Kenney. As she had done many times as a Raider, Hackett stole second base. Several pitches later, she proceeded to slide safely into third base on a fielder’s choice infield play. She did not take the field after the inning, however.
Layne did not enter the game as a pitcher but spent some time warming up in the UVA bullpen.
