The Appomattox Circuit Courtroom was filled with family, friends, distinguished guests and members of the community today as longtime Appomattox County Commonwealth’s Attorney Darrel W. Puckett was officially sworn into the role of General District Court judge for the 10th Judicial District.

In order for all in attendance to be able to see the ceremony, attendees also filled the General District Courtroom, located in the upstairs of the building.

As the new judge, Puckett’s feelings were “very grateful” for the turnout.

“They have supported me throughout and they all had a hand in getting me to where I am today,” said Puckett. “… It was very exciting to see so many people who came out today to celebrate with my family and with me. This is a big day for us. It was a big day for Appomattox County.”

Numerous judges from the 10th and neighboring circuits were in attendance alongside distinguished guests Sen. Mark J. Peake, Del. C. Matthew Farris and retired Del. Watkins M. Abbitt, Jr.

Upon taking this role, Puckett said he did have some goals in mind.

“I will work very hard to do my best to serve the people well,” said Puckett. “… My goals are to see that justice is served, that people are treated fairly and equally, that when they leave the courtroom they feel like they had their day in court. They have been heard and they understand, whatever the result — win, lose or draw — they understand why. And if I can achieve that, then I feel like I’ve done something.”

Puckett was appointed to the position following the announced retirement of Robert G. Woodson Jr., who had been in the role since 1995.
