Bob Sayre, director of the American Civil War Museum (ACWM) in Appomattox, came before the Appomattox Town Council workshop on Tuesday. He shared some research he’s collected to discuss the possibility of collaborating with the town in setting up a Welcome Center at the ACWM.
According to his research, the national park sees an average of 70,000 visitors each year.
He described the national park as a catalyst for business activity in the area.
“It actually impacts businesses in the area as well, whether it’s lodging, restaurants, etc,” explained Sayre.
With all the points of interest in Appomattox and surrounding areas, Sayre believes the welcome center would help keep people around the area a little longer. Having a convenient location to pull over and find information could funnel visitors to various points of interest, keeping them long enough to stick around for dining and lodging.
The ACWM always sees various visitors coming in for direction. Some of the top questions they are asked include inquiries on the location of the national park, restrooms, dining and other points of interest.
Additionally, the national park, not being allowed to promote business, will be free to simply point visitors to the Welcome Center when asked about things such as dining.
Sayre believes the museum is positioned in a prime location to serve as a Welcome Center.
He provided additional ideas — such as installing a digital interactive pad map of Appomattox. He stressed that the welcome center would not replace the visitor’s center.
