Pamplin mayor asks county to consider adding town representative to zoning board

Pamplin Mayor Sarah Blackwell spoke at the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting on Jan. 22 to raise the possibility of adding a direct representative from the Town of Pamplin to a local zoning committee.

Blackwell explained that in 1988 when the Appomattox County Board of Zoning Appeals and Appomattox County Joint Planning Commission was formed, the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) consisted of one representative from the Town of Pamplin, one from the Town of Appomattox, and three from the county-at-large. However, according to her research, around 2002 the numbers were changed to two representatives from the own of Appomattox and three from county at-large.

“I’m not really sure what prompted that,” Blackwell said at the meeting. “It may have been they weren’t able to find someone from Pamplin that was willing to serve, or whatnot.”

Although Blackwell didn’t request immediate action to be taken, she asked that the BOS consider the request.

“What I would like to propose, with all of the redevelopment and revitalization that we have been working on in Pamplin over the last couple of years, would be that when the Town of Appomattox’s second representative’s term expires at the end of December of 2024, if it could be considered — working with the Town of Pamplin and the Town of Appomattox and the Board of Supervisors — to where we could revert to the original agreement from the formation of that board in the county,” she said.
