Man receives 10-year sentence for domestic assault resulting in permanent injuries

On Thursday in Appomattox County Circuit Court, 34-year-old David A. Shelton, of Appomattox, received a 10-year active sentence for an assault that resulted in permanent injuries during a March 2022 domestic violence incident.

Shelton was convicted by a jury of malicious assault and wounding, and strangulation resulting in injury after a two-day trial on Oct. 24 and 25, 2023. He pleaded guilty to fleeing from law enforcement.

The 10-year sentence was applied to the malicious assault and wounding charge, along with 30 years suspended. Shelton also received five years suspended for strangulation resulting in injury and 12 months suspended for fleeing from law enforcement.

According to testimony provided at the October trial, the incident occurred late at night following a series of arguments between Shelton and the female victim. The attack perpetrated by Shelton resulted in several permanent facial injures to the victim.

After calling 9-1-1 to report himself, Shelton was found walking without shoes along the road and later managed to escape the police vehicle and hide in a nearby shed until he was discovered by law enforcement in the early morning hours.
