When Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS) students return from their winter break Jan. 4, they will begin leaving school an hour earlier than normal.

The Appomattox County School Board voted Nov. 19 to approve a daily closing time of 2 p.m. (changed from 3 p.m.) for the second semester of the 2020-21 school calendar year in order to provide more time to focus on virtual learning programs — time that should benefit teachers and students alike.

Dr. Amy Huskin, ACPS director of Curriculum, Instruction and CTE, told the board that a recent survey answered by 205 students and 845 parents and teachers indicated a need to adjust the daily scheduling.

In making the calendar change request, Huskin noted that the extra hour of time at the end of the school day would allow for teachers to spend more time on lesson planning and assisting students in the virtual learning process.
