Firefighters from the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department and Pamplin Volunteer Fire Department work on a fire on Martha Street in Appomattox today.

Although Virginia residents are ordered to stay at home during the coronavirus, known as COVID-19, pandemic, one family now has no home.

At around 10:15 p.m. today, a call came in concerning a kitchen fire at a house on Martha Street, Appomattox.

Fire Chief Jonathan Garrett of the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) said that when the crew arrived on scene shortly after the call, the house was already fully engulfed and had heavy fire showing on the outside and inside of the house.

Firefighters made a defensive attack from the outside and transitioned to an interior attack to get the fire under control.

Garrett said there were about four people who were inside the home at the time of the fire but they got out safely with no injuries.

Although the call came in as a kitchen fire, he said the cause has been undetermined, and they are awaiting the fire marshal’s inspection.
