Chair in softball pitching net

A chair is shown stuck on the top of the softball pitching net at the Appomattox County High School softball field.

The softball pitching net at Appomattox County High School was recently vandalized when someone threw a blue plastic chair onto the top of net, which caused the net to sag.

On Sunday evening, the Appomattox Raiders Softball page on Facebook posted a photograph of the chair in the net. The post did not indicate at what time the vandalism may have occurred.

The chair has since been removed and the net is back to normal condition. Pitchers and catchers use the enclosed net for practice.

Raiders softball coach Janet Rawes said there have been other incidents of vandalism at the softball field in the past, and people have jumped the fences to get onto the field.

Rawes also said the net cost around $800 to install and that a lot of private money has been put into upgrading the softball facilities. She said security cameras may need to be installed in case future incidents occur.

Major Robbie Richardson of the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office said there have been no calls to the police department about the incident in the last several days but agreed that security cameras would be a good idea.
