ACHS girls win final cross country regular season meet

In their last race of the regular season in the lead up to the Cross Country District Championships, the Appomattox Raiders traveled to Frazier Farm in Altavista. The varsity girls team edged out the competition by just one point to win the high school race with 47 points to Galileo’s 48 and Altavista’s 48.

The ladies were led by freshman Elly Nash, who won the 5K in a time of 20:28. Senior Madison Martin and junior Julie Goodman rounded out the team’s top three finishers. Martin finished in second place overall in a time of 21:47 and Goodman placed eighth in a time of 25:52. Freshman Shylynn Randolph and junior Bella Perry finished in 14th and 22nd, respectively, to help secure the win. Randolph ran a 26:43 and Perry ran a 33:47.

The varsity boys team landed in third place in the Altavista meet with 94 points, behind Galileo in first with 22 points and Dan River High School in second with 73 points. Galileo’s Daniel Amarillo and Barak Tahirkhali snagged first and second places in 18:29 and 18:39, respectively. Appomattox junior Clay Hamilton took third place in a time of 18:44, followed by junior Christian Goodman and freshman Hunter Lucas. Goodman ran a 19:11 for sixth place, and Hunter ran a 20:28 for 12th place. Sophomore David Owen claimed 34th place in a time of 23:21 and Matthew Thomas took 57th in 27:00. The high school cross country team races again in the District Championships in Nelson County on Oct. 30.
