The Appomattox Raiders survived a fourth quarter rally by the top-seeded Radford Bobcats to come away with a 38-33 upset at Radford High School in the VHSL Football Class 2C Region Semifinal.
Appomattox took a 32-20 lead with 11:28 remaining on a 20-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Pennix.
Radford quarterback Landen Clark scrambled on the next possession but the Raiders forced a fumble and recovered the ball near midfield. Both teams were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the play.
Raiders quarterback Gray Peterson connected with Alex Caruso on a touchdown pass to extend the lead to 38-20 The ensuing extra point was missed. It was the second Appomattox touchdown after a Radford turnover on the night.
Radford rallied with a seven-yard touchdown run by Clark and a touchdown pass to pull within five points at 38-33.
Appomattox recovered the onside kick with a little over three minutes left to play. On 4th-and-6, Peterson ran for a first down off a fake pitch to the Radford 35-yard line with 1:50 remaining. The Raiders then faced 4th-and-7 with just five seconds to go, and Peterson took the snap, ran backwards, and was tackled as time expired.
In the other Region 2C Semifinal, third seed Glenvar defeated second seed Martinsville 35-0.
Fourth seed Appomattox (9-3) and Glenvar (9-3) will square off in the Region 2C Championship next week. Game information has not been released as of the time of this post.
