Appomattox Insights: August Board of Supervisors Meeting Recap

Howdy Friends! August was a busy month for the Board of Supervisors. We had a special called meeting on August 12 regarding the Department of Social Services. I wrote an update on that meeting two weeks ago. If you missed it let me know and I will sent it to you.

The August regular meeting was quite busy as well and there was a public hearing.

August Meeting Highlights

As always, we had a public comment period. We are always happy to hear comments from the citizens, good or bad.

Appearances

Mr. Shannon Lewis, the new forestry manager with the Virginia Department of Forestry, made an annual visit to the meeting. Each year in August, the forestry department presents a payment to the county from timber sales. The county receives this payment in lieu of taxes. This year, 148 acres of timber netted $17,028.38 to the county. He gave us an interesting note about the forest as well. No timbering takes place in June and July to protect the northern long-eared bat. We are thankful to the Forest Service as they are stewards to our forest land and wildlife.
