Mary Frances Goin Lucas

Mary Frances Goin Lucas, Age 78, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away January 10, 2023, surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Appomattox, Virginia (the eighth of 12 children) of the late DeWitt Talmadge and Ruth Alice Brown Goin. She was preceded in death by siblings, Nannie G. Farinholt, Rachel G. Harris and Joseph Goin. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Andrew John Lucas; daughter, Andrea Lucas Ramsey (Dustin); son, Andrew (Drew) John Lucas Jr. (Stephanie); grandchildren, Addison (Addy) Grace and Emma Rose Ramsey and Connor Brown Lucas. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Hunter Goin, Katie G. Adams, Marshall Goin, Lester Goin, Leon Goin, Barbara G. Dickerson, Margaret G. Guido and Stephen Goin; her brothers-in-law, Joseph H. (Anne Lewis) and James W. Lucas (Beth). In addition, she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many great-nephews and nieces and cousins.

Mary graduated from Appomattox County High School, class of 1962, and recently gathered with her classmates for their 60th reunion. After working for law firms in Williamsburg, Va., San Francisco, Calif. and Boston, Mass., she returned to Virginia, where she embarked on a long career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and ultimately retired as Secretary to the President of the Federal Reserve Bank. After her retirement, she remained actively involved with the Federal Reserve Retiree Club. In 1971, she married the love of her life, John, and they began putting their roots down. A wonderful home in Sauer’s Garden led to the formation of the Bridge Club, a group of ladies that still meet regularly, but have rarely played bridge in the last 40 some years. A move to Windsor Farms in the 1980s ushered in a new wave of neighbors and friendships. The fellowships forged here became invaluable as the pandemic set in, with regular Happy Hour meetings in the median. Mary loved traveling. From when she first set out across the country in her ’65 Mustang, to all of the trips with her beloved husband, John, she explored the world near and far. Whether it was by train to New York, a Winnebago adventure through New England or European River cruises, each expedition was enjoyed and cherished. Their Rappahannock River cottage was a favorite getaway, with its beautiful views of the Rappahannock River Bridge, and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Family gatherings were always more fun at the Rivah!

Here at home, Mary was in almost constant contact with her family, friends and neighbors. She will be sorely missed by her family, her Bridge Club, the Federal Reserve Retirees, her friends at the Tuckahoe Women’s Club, the Windsor Farms Garden Club and everyone who knew her. Mary was a treasured sister to her siblings, a stellar employee at the Federal Reserve Bank, a loving wife, a devoted mother and adored as a grandmother. She lived a big life surpassed only by the size of her heart. Mary was always the brightest star no matter how dark the sky.

We will miss her dearly. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Lucy Corr and the compassionate team of Affinity Hospice.
