On Sunday morning at 9 a.m., the local American Legion Post 104 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9855 honored the 2,996 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and the United Airlines Flight 93 airplane that crashed in Shanksville, Pa.
The memorial ceremony was held indoors at the American Legion Post 104 headquarters building on Oakleigh Avenue. It was originally planned for the Wall of Honor location in front of the Appomattox Courthouse on Court Street but was moved due to rainy weather.
Approximately 40 people were present as Maj. Gen. Scott G. West, U.S. Army (retired) gave the keynote address. West is a native of Moses Lake, Washington but now resides with his wife, Patti, in Appomattox County. West retired from active duty in 2010 after a long military career that began when he was commissioned in 1976. West is also a member of the American Legion Post 104 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9855.
