Shortly after 4 p.m. today the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department was called to the 200-block of Cedar Lane in Appomattox County where a Ford tractor was on fire in a large grass field.

Appomattox County Fire Chief Jonathan Garrett said a man was operating the tractor when the incident occurred. The man, whose name wasn't made available, was uninjured.

Garrett said the direct cause of the fire is unknown at this time but it started in the engine area.

Fire crew members were able to put the fire out quickly before it had an opportunity to spread through the grass. The tractor sustained heavy damage and was a total loss.

Showing up at the scene were AVFD Engine 3, Tanker 5 and Brush Fire 6, the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office, and the Virginia Department of Forestry.

Garrett explained that an employee with Virginia Department of Forestry happened to be nearby and heard the call go out, so the employee arrived in case a grass fire would have ensued.
