Appomattox Primary School

Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Annette Bennett said that the schools had “a really smooth week” and that it only took two days to get “settled down” after working out primary school traffic.

The prospect of reopening public schools in Appomattox County amid the same COVID-19 pandemic that prompted Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to close schools in the spring was a challenge that staff and administration worked long hours over the summer months to meet.

That mission was accomplished during week one of in-person classes that began Monday, Sept. 14, according to Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Annette Bennett. Aside from a few minor noneduca-tional glitches, things went as planned.

“We had a really smooth week,” Bennett said. “We had the normal primary school traffic that we had to work out, but it only took two days to get that settled down.”

Appomattox Primary School (APS) is located on Ferguson Street, and the first few days of any school year involve some traffic backup as motorists and bus drivers get used to the timing of the morning drop-off at the school. This year, the buses unload students at 8 a.m. instead of 7:50 due to what Bennett referred to as contract hours of school instructional staff.
