Hurricane Helene to impact VDOT's Lynchburg District (includes Appomattox)

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Central Virginia can expect heavy rain and strong winds from Hurricane Helene. In the Lynchburg District, we expect localized flooding, strong wind gusts, downed trees and power lines, and potentially widespread power outages.

The rain and winds are expected to be strongest beginning early Friday morning. The storm is expected to exit the Lynchburg District late Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Some roads in the Lynchburg District are already closed due to high water. This reminder, never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around. Don't drown! VDOT crews will barricade or use barrels to mark sections of roadways as impassable. Do not remove these barricades. Do not drive around them. Turn around and find an alternate route. It is best to stay off the roads during storms. If you are driving, slow down. Ponding on road surfaces can cause hydroplaning and a loss of control. Keep your headlights on to be more visible and give yourself extra stopping time.

Treat all downed power lines as live. Stay back and report them from a safe distance.
