Appomattox to host 2024 Virginia State DYB Baseball Tournament; volunteers needed!

The “boys of summer” will soon descend upon Appomattox as the 2024 Virginia State DYB Baseball Tournament comes to town July 5-10 at the baseball fields of the Appomattox County Community Park off of Police Tower Road.

Participating teams will consist of the Minors Division I (ages 9-10) and "O"Zone Division I and II (ages 11-12).

Appomattox successfully hosted a state “O”Zone and Machine Pitch baseball tournament back in 2016 under the leadership of then AYS President Ray Perkins, which provided a good barometer for another selection in 2024.

The process to host the 2024 tournament began in February 2023 when the late Lee Scruggs, who passed away suddenly on Aug. 1 last year, requested for Appomattox to host the event at the annual meeting attended by youth baseball commissioners and presidents. At the time, Scruggs filled both roles as Appomattox Youth Sports (AYS) President and AYS Baseball Commissioner.

Volunteers are needed to assist at the tournament, as Ferguson strongly emphasized, in roles such as collecting money at the gate, working concessions, public address announcing, keeping scorebooks, dragging dirt infields between games, etc.

Individuals interested in volunteering may send a message and name their time preferences via the Appomattox Dixie Youth Baseball Facebook page, call AYS Baseball Commissioner Bryan Ferguson at 434-610-0201, or visit the AYS website at leagues.teamlinkt.com/appomattoxyouthsports.
