The Germans entered the Great War with the Central Powers, August 1, 1914, first declaring war on Russia, following suit with France and Britain.
The silent service was put into action to form a blockade around the British Islands to try and stop supplies and weaponry from reaching the British and French, to scare them into surrender.
The United States was neutral but busy supplying materials to make war. The allies needed everything from shoes and socks to rifles and cannon shells. The American people were extremely opposed to war with numerous marches on Washington D.C. and taking to the streets in all the major cities.
The war was great for our economy across all industries with the middle class on the rise. The U.S .citizens continued to travel to France and Britain for business and pleasure aboard ships flying neutral flags.
This was a prosperous time.
