Mrs. Joel W. Flood was elected president of the newly organized Appomattox Woman’s Club at a meeting held at the county library. There were 51 charter members of the Woman’s Club.

Prospect couple slain in apparent double homicide
Prospect residents Carolyn and Marvin Mullens were apparently shot several times with an automatic weapon, which they owned, by an intruder. The Mullens’ two teenage daughters fled the home after hearing a confrontation and went to their grandmother’s home.

Mrs. Ellen Beasley and Mrs. Harriete Beasley were co-hostesses for a stork shower for Mrs. Roma Morris at Harriete’s home Sunday.

State Police open new headquarters
The new State Police Division III Headquarters officially opened its doors as nearly 300 people attended a special open house ceremony at the 12,000-square-foot Appomattox facility alongside State Route 613.
