April comes from the Latin word, aperio, "to open" (bud), because plants begin to grow during this month. April’s birthstone is the diamond, and the flower is the daisy. April is: Amateur Radio Month, Celebrate Diversity Month, Library Snapshot Month, National Autism Awareness Month, Week of The Young Child (1-7), International Wildlife Film Week (22-27), National Park Week (22-30), Disability Book Week (23-29), National Library Week (23-29), Appomattox Day (9), National D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Day (12), National Gardening Day (14), Earth Day (22), National Library Day (25), Morse Code Day (27), and Adopt A Shelter Pet Day (30), just to name a few of the observations going on. Be sure to visit our Facebook page often as we will be posting many more observances with some fun and educational links for patrons to enjoy.

For the Wednesday, March 22nd Preschool Story & Craft Time, a library employee presented the book “Waiting for Wings” by Lois Ehlert. This book is about spring and butterflies emerging into the world with their vibrant beauty. But where do butterflies come from? How are they born? What do they eat, and how? We followed the life cycle of a few common butterflies, from their beginnings as tiny hidden eggs and hungry caterpillars to their transformation into full-grown butterflies throughout the book. We followed up by assembling a colorful flower, embellished with a butterfly sticker, followed by snacks and juice. If you missed the book you can view a reading on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4tImWDoK20. Our next Story & Craft Time will on Wednesday, March 29, starting at 11 a.m. and noon. Interested in seeing caterpillars transform into butterflies? Check back throughout the late spring as we are planning to host painted lady butterflies again this year in the children's section.
