With extra time on their hands in light of COVID-19, Frieda Marston and her granddaughter Kelly Harnett have found a way to give back to the community. It all started when they heard that staff at the Appomattox County nursing home were struggling with their face mask supply.

“Everything I know about sewing came from my grandma,” said Harnett who splits her time between Appomattox County and Charlotte County. Marston learned from her own mother. One could say it’s a family tradition passed on to two granddaughters and a grandson.

In the span of one day, over a week ago, Harnett said they made about 20 masks, which were then sent to the nursing home in Appomattox. The rest was history. They knew they’d hit upon a project to keep them busy in an effort to help others while staying home.
