The Appomattox Town Council came out of a closed session Tuesday, Nov. 24, to announce that James Boyce Sr. would be filling the vacant seat left by the passing of Dr. Paul Harvey.

Boyce had held a seat on the town council for two years and decided to run again during this year’s campaign. The run for the town council seat did not result in another term for Boyce.

When Jonathan Garrett resigned from town council in August, Boyce put his name into the pool of those being considered for the seat. Of the several applications considered, it was Aaron Tilton who was chosen to fill Garrett’s vacant seat.

Fast forward to October, and the passing Harvey left the town council with another vacancy (this time under tragic circumstances). Harvey had been the town’s mayor for the past 12 years and decided to run for a town council seat and won.

Harvey died Oct. 19, and his term on town council was unexpired.

After the town council meeting, Boyce provided comment on being appointed to fill Harvey’s vacancy. He figured he had nothing to lose by making a third attempt for a seat on the town council.
