A light went out in this world when Jane McMichael Hayes went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 23. The youngest daughter of Alexander and Rose Burns McMichael, Jane was born in Philadelphia, PA, on Jan. 16, 1923.

Jane grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls in 1941. She went to work for the Army Air Corps in Washington, DC, following school, later transferring to Asheville, NC, during WWII where she met and later married Cledith N Hayes.

Following the war, they moved to Hampton, VA, where they raised their family. Jane was a stay-at-home mom until all her children were in school. She then returned to work and retired as a Management Analyst from Fort Monroe. Jane enjoyed spending time with family and friends, volunteering, reading, traveling and doing the daily crossword puzzles in the Daily Press.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Betty Ann Hayes; husband, Cledith; and son C. Neal Hayes, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Susan J Hayes; son, James M Hayes and wife Bonnie; daughter Sharan H Ballard and husband Ray; and daughter-in-law Carol C Hayes as well as six grandchildren: James M Hayes, Jr (Barbie); Rachel B Vogeley (Kevin); Michael R Hayes (Jennifer); Lori H Dietrich (Derek); Brooke B Elliott (Tim); and Lisa H Matthews (Scott) plus eleven great grandchildren: Jordan Hayes, Christian Hayes, Logan Dietrich, Emily Elliott, Sydney Dietrich, Charles Vogeley, Judson Vogeley, Elizabeth Elliott, Jack Hayes, Wyatt Hayes and Neal Matthews. Jane was also a friend and “surrogate mother” to Ann Bryant, Barbara Murphy and Debbie Williams.

The viewing will take place from 10–11 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, at St Rose of Lima and The Korean Martyrs Catholic Church, 2114 Bay Avenue in Hampton, followed by a Funeral Mass being celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Hampton Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to your favorite charity.
