Alta Thompson Evans, 95, of Purdum Mill Road, Appomattox, passed away Wednesday, June 20. She was the wife of the late Aubrey Bascom Evans, Jr.
Born in Burkeville, Sept. 28, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Irena Chandler and Evan Button Thompson. Alta was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was a member of “The Quilters,” a group of ladies who met on a back porch and made many quilts for people in the community. She had a love of flowers and gardens. Alta was a hard worker all her life. Her last quilt was made at age 93. She never knew the word “can’t.” Her family was her pride of life; she gave them all she had.
She is survived by two sons, Aubrey B. “Butch” Evans, III, and A. Russell Evans and wife, Dorothy; four daughters, Audrey Graham, Alice E. Howard and husband, Walter, Avis E. “Rose” Wilson, and Amy E. Nash and husband, Cecil; one sister, Mary Ann Garret; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Marvin S. Evans and wife, Marion; and one sister-in-law, Betty E. Green.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Terry Evans, Sr.; four brothers, George Thompson, Fred Thompson, Dan Thompson and Frank Chandler; three sisters, Amy Mosley, Elizabeth Thompson and Erma Blucher; and a son-in-law, Dennis L. Wilson.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 23, at Liberty Baptist Church, 1709 Church Street, Appomattox, with the Rev. Dr. Rusty Small officiating. A private family burial was to be held at Liberty cemetery.
